FAQ's

  • What do the letters “TFMM” mean on the “sash”?

Well in the first place the “sash” is formally called a “baldric” but specifically the initials stand for “Tempus Fugit Momento Mori” which means “time flies remember death” and is a guiding principle of sorts for the Knights of Columbus.

  • What is the “motto” of the Knights?

“In Service To One.  In Service To All.”  This exemplifies the overall mission of the Knights of Columbus – service to each other and to all in our community.  Remember that the Knights organized to take care of widows and orphans of those who died in the mines and factories in late 1800s – most of which had no insurance.

  • Why does the hat have feathers?

Formally called a “chapeau” (from the French) it traces its heritage back to naval headgear – it us used as a mark of dignity.  The plume is made of synthetic material.  Year’s ago, top-hats were worn, but those have been replaced with the more ceremonial look used today.  Many agree that it is the chapeau with its “feathers” that make the Knights so easily recognizable.

  • Why all the different colored capes?

We touched on this in the section on regalia.  The color of the capes help to denote rank within our order.

  • What are the swords for? Do you ever stab people?

Generally this question comes from a child (goes to the “pirate” that they see) and always brings smiles.  The swords (in addition to being ceremonial just as they are with the Marines) are used to signify that the Knights are “defenders” of the holy Church and all who serve her.  Thankfully we don’t have to carry a shield.  As for stabbing people . . . generally we only stab ourselves as we practice to get the swords safely in and out of the scabbard.
